Overview

Obstetrics looks after pregnancy, labour and the weeks after delivery, while gynaecology covers the wider health of the female reproductive system. The two work together across a woman's life, from adolescence to menopause.

Regular antenatal visits allow blood pressure, sugar levels and the baby's growth to be tracked, so that problems are picked up early and the delivery can be planned safely.

Frequently asked questions

How many antenatal visits are usually needed?

In an uncomplicated pregnancy, roughly monthly until the seventh month, fortnightly until the ninth, then weekly until delivery.

Which scans are done during pregnancy?

Typically a dating scan, an anomaly scan around the twentieth week, and growth scans later, with additional scans if advised.

Is a caesarean always planned in advance?

No. Many are decided during labour based on the mother's and baby's condition at that moment.
