Overview

Gastroenterology covers the food pipe, stomach, intestines, liver, gallbladder and pancreas. Symptoms such as acidity, bloating, altered bowel habit and jaundice all point back to this system.

Endoscopy allows the lining of the gut to be seen directly and biopsies taken where needed, which turns a vague complaint into a precise diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions

Is endoscopy painful?

It is done with throat spray or light sedation and is usually well tolerated, taking only a few minutes.

Is fatty liver serious?

It is often reversible in early stages with weight loss, exercise and control of sugar and lipids, but it needs monitoring.

Can long-term antacids be harmful?

Prolonged unsupervised use can mask a serious cause. Persistent acidity should be evaluated.
