Laboratory testing for diagnosis, screening and monitoring

All specialities

Overview

The pathology laboratory analyses blood, urine, tissue and other samples. Its reports underpin nearly every clinical decision, from confirming an infection to monitoring the safety of long-term medication.

Accuracy depends on the whole chain — correct sample collection, proper handling, calibrated equipment and interpretation by a qualified pathologist.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to fast for blood tests?

For sugar and lipid tests, usually yes — eight to twelve hours. Most other tests do not require fasting.

How soon are reports available?

Routine blood reports are generally same day; cultures and biopsies take longer by nature.

Should I interpret my report myself?

Values outside the reference range are not always abnormal for you. Discuss the report with your doctor.
