Ultrasound (All Special Scans)
Radiation-free imaging including specialised scans
Overview
Ultrasound uses sound waves rather than radiation to produce live images of organs and blood flow. It is safe, painless and can be repeated as often as needed, which makes it ideal in pregnancy.
Beyond routine abdominal scans, specialised studies assess the foetus in detail, examine small structures such as the thyroid or scrotum, and measure blood flow in vessels.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a full bladder?
For pelvic and early pregnancy scans, usually yes. Abdominal scans normally need fasting instead — reception will advise.
Is ultrasound safe in pregnancy?

How long does a scan take?
Most scans take ten to twenty minutes; detailed foetal scans take longer.
